The best Nightwing comic series starts with Taylor. Then goes back. There is a lot to read and most of it is worth your time.
Tom Taylor Nightwing: The Definitive Run
The Tom Taylor Nightwing run started in 2021 with Nightwing #78. It ran until 2024. Over 40 issues. It won multiple Eisner Awards . It is the run DC picked to represent Nightwing in its compact line. The first volume is called Leaping into the Light .
Why does it work? It fixed a broken character. Before this run, Dick Grayson had amnesia. He was calling himself "Ric." He had burned his costume. He was driving a taxi. It was a low point . Taylor and Redondo brought him back. They put him in blue again. They gave him a dog named Haley. They gave him billions from Alfred's estate. He used the money to fix Bl\\\\\\\üdhaven .
The art is a big part of it. Bruno Redondo did things no one else does. One issue is a single continuous panel. Another is told from first-person POV. Every issue felt special . The run also gave fans the Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon romance they wanted and it made Nightwing an A-list hero. He led the Titans when the Justice League was gone .

Best Nightwing Comic Series of All Time: The Other Essential Runs
Tom Taylor's run is the best starting point. But it is not the only great one. Here are the other runs that matter.
- Chuck Dixon's Run (1996-2000s). This is the foundation. Dixon wrote over 70 issues. He defined Nightwing as a solo hero. He gave him Bl\\\\\\\üdhaven. He gave him his own villains. - Grayson (2014-2016). This is different. Dick is not Nightwing here. He is a spy. He fakes his death and joins a secret organization called Spyral. It is a spy-thriller. It is fun. It is smart. Tom King co-wrote it. It is not traditional Nightwing. But it is one of the best stories with the character .
- The Black Mirror (2011). Scott Snyder wrote this. Dick is Batman here. Bruce Wayne is gone. Dick wears the cowl. It shows a different Dark Knight. One who is lighter. One who still smiles. It proves Dick could be Batman. It is one of Snyder's best works .
- Tim Seeley's Run (2016). This is the DC Rebirth era. Seeley built on the Grayson spy stuff. He brought Nightwing back to Blüdhaven. He made the book fun again. It is a good modern starting point if you want something before Taylor .
Nightwing Freefall: Is It Worth Reading?
- Nightwing: Freefall is by Peter J. Tomasi. It collects Nightwing #140-146. It came out in 2008 . It is not one of the best runs. It is decent. But it is not essential.
- The story is about bodies of dead villains disappearing. Nightwing gets pulled into a mystery involving Talia al Ghul and Dr. Creighton Kendall . It has good art by Rags Morales. It tries something different. It moves Dick to New York. It makes him manager of a museum. It gives him a glider .
But it does not quite work. One review said it makes him "just another superhero." It loses the unique tone of Blüdhaven . Read it if you are a completist. Skip it if you want the best stuff first
